It was in Barrio Blanquizal, one of the most violent parts of Medellín, Colombia, that small pieces of timber were carefully crafted into crosses by unseen hands of the poor. Five hundred thousand wooden crosses became sources of hope and symbols of peace to the young people of the world who gathered in Toronto for World Youth Day 2002.
