“The Catholic Women’s League: For God and Canada”

Mary Rose Bacani

Mary Rose was asked to attend the 86th Annual National Convention of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, which took place in August of 2006 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was there that she was introduced to what the CWL is really all about – a strong spiritual life and a just world! She saw these women in prayer and in discussion on issues that they resolve to bring to the government. She also found out that not only older women join the League – members also come from high schools and university campuses. She was fortunate to be able to visit the first college council in Canada, St. Joseph’s College CWL Council, located at the University of Alberta. And she finally met the famous Bizarre Women’s Group (Bizarre for ‘strikingly out of the ordinary’) of the Edmonton Diocesan CWL Council, a group of young CWL members dedicated to recruiting new members for the League. The end result of her trips – an 18-minute promotional video for The Catholic Women’s League of Canada full of fun, spirituality, dynamism and heart. Very much like the women she met. Mary Rose has worked on videos promoting anything from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, to a social justice project for the children in Uganda. Working on a video to increase awareness of these Canadian women of strength and character was a real treat!

Richard Valenti

Richard did not know what to expect when he started editing the video for The Catholic Women’s League of Canada with Mary Rose. He certainly did not realize that it would be one of his more creative works. His mother is a CWL member, and now he understands more clearly what she does and what her ideals are. He was pleasantly surprised to see that young people are being drawn to the CWL, and he was inspired to make this video upbeat and dynamic.
