The Catholic Women’s League:
For God and Canada

You have probably seen them in action in almost every parish – holding bake sales and other fundraisers, leading social justice activities, and meeting in the parish hall. They are the women of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada. But do you know what these ladies do beyond baking and meeting?

Since its foundation in Canada in 1920, The Catholic Women’s League of Canada remains the largest national organization of women in the nation, with close to 100,000 members today.

The League has a history of women who have put their God-given talents at the service of the Catholic Church and their country. Popes Pius XII, John XXIII, Paul VI and John Paul II have each commended these women for their contributions to our Canadian church and society. These women have met with the Canadian government on issues as diverse as affordable housing for low-income Canadians and the trafficking of children. The League is also affiliated with the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations (WUCWO) which holds consultative status with United Nations agencies.

These women pray together, do charitable works, march in defense of life, and fight for issues of concern for all Canadians. Above all, they hold each other’s hand in the journey of life and faith. As one of them put it, “We laugh because laughter is indeed God’s gift. We cry because we feel another’s pain. We use our talents because we must. We make a difference because we can.”

Meet the women, both young and old, who are the face of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada and of our Church today. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will be inspired by these women who proudly raise the Canadian flag, and continue to enrich each other’s lives through a faith lived out in loving relationships.
