Directors’ Comments On“Coady's Dream”
Mary Rose Bacani
Working on a documentary that weaves history, biography, and international development together was a real challenge for Mary Rose. Her experience introduced her to the Catholic legacy of St. Francis Xavier University, one of Canada’s premier universities, and to the unique beauty of eastern Nova Scotia. During both her visits there, she was able to talk to relatives and friends of the Rev. Dr. Moses Coady, and remained touched by the deep admiration they have for the man. She also met students from around the world in the 2005 and 2006 Coady Diploma program. They shared with her their respect for Coady’s ideas and work, as well as their hopes that the techniques they have learned at the Institute will take root in their home countries. She feels fortunate to have experienced something of what they hope to see back home – people from different backgrounds and religions working together to build a more just and peaceful world.
Richard Valenti
Like Mary Rose, Richard found this documentary both challenging and very rewarding. Discovering the Catholic roots of St. Francis Xavier University and learning about the Rev. Dr. Moses Coady enriched his outlook on Canadian history and international development. Trying to illustrate the powerful force of a personality decades after the man is gone, really brought out his creativity and drew him closer to one of Canada’s strongest historical figures.
