William Terrence McGrattan:
Father Bill McGrattan is a native of London, Ontario and belonged to the parish of St. George’s Parish in Byron. After graduating from Catholic Central High School, he attended the University of Western Ontario from 1975-79 and graduated with a BESc in Chemical Engineering. From 1979-1982, he worked as a professional engineer in both Canada and the United States. He then entered St. Peter’s Seminary in London in 1982, graduating from King’s College and the University of Western Ontario with a Master of Divinity in 1987. Ordained a priest of the London diocese in 1987, he was appointed to St. Joseph’s Parish in Chatham, Ontario, where he served from 1987 until 1990. He left parish work and began studies in Italy. He completed a Licentiate in Fundamental Moral Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1992.
Father McGrattan joined the formation faculty of St. Peter’s Seminary in 1992. He has acted in the capacity of a formation advisor, spiritual director, and Dean of Theology, and was appointed Rector in 1997. At present he is an Associate Professor within the Theology faculty of St. Peter’s Seminary and a Lecturer in the Religious Studies Department of King’s University College. He has taught courses in Fundamental Moral Theology, Christian Social Teaching, and Religious Studies - Catholic Theology, Sacrament of the Eucharist, and Holy Orders. In addition to preaching diocesan priest retreats and giving workshops in adult faith development for Catholic teachers, he has served on the committee which wrote the Ratio Fundamentalis Sacerdotalis for English speaking seminaries in Canada, for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. He has worked with the Association of Theological Schools for the United States and Canada, and co-authored an article: “The Public Character of Theologic al Education: A Perspective from Roman Catholic Schools of Theology and Seminaries”. Father McGrattan was recently appointed to the Executive Board of the Association of Theological Schools.
In the diocese of London, he continues to serve on the Board of St. Peter’s Seminary and Foundation, the Board of King’s University College, Save A Family Board, the Health Care Ethics Committee of St. Joseph’s Health Centre, the Priest Council and Priest Personnel Committee of the diocese, and is currently the Director of the Permanent Diaconate Program which was established in 2001.
His interests include running year-round, tennis in the summer, and hockey and skiing in the winter. And of course, the enjoyment of a good novel when time permits and the hospitality of family or friends.
