9:00pm Travels and Traditions – Shrine at Czestochowa
Each year, for centuries, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have come to Jasna Gora. Many make the journey from nearby Polish cities on foot, others travel half way around the world.
During the days surrounding the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin, on August 15th, the avenue of the Blessed Virgin Mary that connects the center of town with Jasna Gora is filled with a river of people. When you arrive in the chapel you find the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary and Child. The work is believed to have been painted in the Holy Land by St. Luke the Evangelist. It has made the monastery one of the most important Catholic shrines in Europe.

With the fall of Saigon to communist forces in 1975 millions of Vietnamese citizens decided to flee their country rather than face life under a communist regime. Of the 2 million “Boat People” that fled half never made it. Hundreds of thousands were lost at sea or became victims of marauding pirates. In this issue of “Eye on the Church” David Naglieri speaks to many Vietnamese Catholic Canadians who share how the gospel virtues of faith and hope lay the foundations for their survival.

In 1994, the long and painful history of the small African country of Rwanda came to a dreadful climax: the genocide and a death toll of approximately one million, within three months.
