The announcement called into question the future of the Legionaries and their lay movement Regnum Christi. The Vatican was further rocked by the global outcry after Pope Benedict's decision to lift the excommunication of four bishops of the Society of St. Pius X. When one of the bishops was revealed to be Holocaust denier the Holy Father was confronted with a full fledge public relations nightmare.
