The Light of The East: Understanding The Eastern Catholic Churches, Part 1
December 10, 2009 (Toronto) – Salt + Light Television, Canada’s Catholic Network, takes a look at the Eastern Catholic Churches on the Thursday, December 17th and Sunday, December 20th episodes of their flagship show, Catholic Focus.
There are different positions or ideas people have in trying to understand the Eastern Catholic Churches. Are Eastern Catholics really Roman Catholics of an Eastern Rite? Or are they Orthodox Christians currently in communion with Rome? Or is their primary purpose to unite the East and the West? Who or what are the Eastern Catholic Churches?
In his 1995 Apostolic Letter "Orientale Lumen", Pope John Paul II writes that the Catholic Church needs to breathe with both lungs, Western (Roman) and Eastern, and that the full manifestation of the Church's catholicity is preserved and grows in the life of the Churches of the East as in the West. Salt + Light producer Mary Rose Bacani participates in a Sunday liturgy at St. Elias Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ontario and discusses with Fr. Roman Galadza, Fr. Protodeacon David Kennedy and parishioners the significance of their liturgy in light of “Orientale Lumen”. She also discusses iconography with Bishop David Motiuk, the Ukrainian Catholic Eparch of Edmonton; with Fr. Michael Kowalchyk of St. Josaphat’s Cathedral and Fr. Anton Tarasenko of St. George the Martyr Church in Edmonton; and with Kateryna Chalyk, an iconographer in Toronto. Join Mary Rose and guests as they explore the identity of the Eastern Catholic Churches.
