MEDIA RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A CATHOLIC PROJECT FOR CITY SCHOOLS - A Solution for Gang Violence
New Salt + Light Documentary Explores the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board’s Solution for Gang Violence and Bullying

Changing Course
TORONTO, August 10, 2009
–  The new Salt + Light Documentary, Changing Course, explores what one Catholic school board has done to combat the growing concerns of gang violence and intimidation. These issues are no longer confined to inner-city schools and have increasingly infected suburban neighbourhoods.

The documentary, written and directed by Salt + Light’s producer, Kris Dmytrenko, follows students for one school year, revealing their challenges, victories, and the limitless potential of Catholic education.

Father Thomas Rosica, CSB, CEO of Salt + Light Television says, "The important, timely message of Changing Course extends to more than just parents and educators. At a time when critics have campaigned to cut provincial funding for schools, the public needs to witness anew the dedication, innovation and inspiration of the publicly-funded Catholic school system in several places across Canada. What is at stake is more than Catholic education, but the very futures of vulnerable young people who require the resources of the whole community.

Historically, the Catholic community has been a leader in offering excellent education to our young people, and providing them with role models and hope as they face the future.  Changing Course shows us that the Catholic School system has once again risen to the occasion to meet the great challenges of our times in the Gospel spirit of the Beatitudes."

The new documentary which premiered in the spring on Salt + Light Television, the Canadian Catholic television network, will be available on DVD as of August 24th.
