It all started at a parish hall in Abbotsford…

[Note: This blog entry comes from Bryan Duggan and John Moss, two seminarians from the Seminary of Christ the King in Mission, British Columbia. The two have been interning at Salt + Light for the month of August.]
Bryan DugganSeveral months ago, in the parish hall of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Abbotsford, British Columbia, a number of priests, seminarians and lay faithful gathered to hear Fr. Thomas Rosica speak on the Catholic Church and the media. After a wonderful talk, the seminarians of Christ the King Seminary went to lunch with Fr. Rosica, and he invited us to intern at Salt + Light Television Network. Two of us – John and I – took him up on his generous offer, and we arrived in Toronto two weeks ago to begin a month long internship. I’m not sure what exactly our expectations were, but we were blown away by what we found.
The atmosphere in the studio is one of mission, of dedication, and of joy. The remarkably young staff that keeps Salt + Light running is composed of men and women from diverse backgrounds with equally diverse skills and talents. The staff work hard, they stay late, and often come in on evenings and weekends to put the finishing touches on whatever project they are working on. They share a common purpose, that of evangelizing through the medium of television. This is no mere eight hour per day job, this is a calling.
John MossAs interns, John and I have numerous tasks assigned to us. Usually it is the simple but time-consuming work that needs to be done, but can be done by anyone. Through this we have had the privilege of seeing the behind-the-scenes work that goes into the making of each television program and documentary produced by Salt + Light. The subject matter that we deal with varies from an interview with Cardinal Van Thuan’s sister, to coverage of the first Steubenville Atlantic Youth Conference. Nowhere else have I encountered such an intense focus on the life of today’s Church!
Life is not all work and no play, however. In between deadlines, the staff manages to squeeze in the weekly game of beach volleyball, the occasional soccer match, and of course, the odd practical joke.
Our experience at Salt and Light has been eye-opening, to say the least. This close knit group shares a common mission. They work together and pray together, and under the leadership of Fr. Rosica they provide Canada with its only 24 hour Catholic television channel, and it has been an honour to be a part of it.
