Gillian Kantor
Producer
Gillian Kantor joined the Salt + Light team in December 2003 while working as a reporter and youth editor for The Catholic Register newspaper. Now that she’s at S+L as a full-time producer, she’s excited to do her part in sharing the millions of stories that Canada’s Catholic community has to tell.
Gillian calls Shaunavon, Saskatchewan home. She was baptized and received the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation all at Christ the King Parish in the small prairie town. Gillian received her degree in English at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon before moving to Toronto to study journalism at Humber College. Throughout her student years, she was an active member of Catholic Christian Outreach, a university student movement dedicated to evangelization on campuses across Canada.
In working for S+L, Gillian’s eyes have been opened to and her interests piqued in a number of aspects of the Catholic faith. The lives of the saints were especially opened up for her on a pilgrimage through Germany and Italy (which will soon be a S+L documentary) that led her through the towns, homes, and churches of a number of saints. Now she counts among her friends St. Francis de Sales (for his writing), St. Gianna Molla (for her love of family), St. Joseph (for his stability), and St. Germaine Cousin (patron saint of country girls – yeehaw). And she repeats the words of St. Francis de Sales: “Be who you are and be that well.”
Gillian credits her work ethic and creativity to growing up on the prairies and, especially, the lessons learned on her first job. "During the summers from the ages of 12 to 18, I would ride my bike two miles every morning to my neighbour’s house and spend the day picking peas in the most gargantuan garden ever. And then I would sit inside, shell them, eat homemade doughnuts, and watch Oprah. That was the good life."
Gillian is married to David Kantor and lives in Oakville, Ont.
